About the program
The Biodiverse Brisbane Initiative’s vision is to improve the biodiversity of native plants and animals within the city.
The Biodiverse Brisbane Initiative is supporting Council’s Brisbane. Clean, Green, and Sustainable target of increasing natural habitat cover on mainland Brisbane to 40% by 2031, where 75% of the natural habitat will be connected and healthy.
The focus of the Initiative is the revegetation of strategic ecological wetland and waterway corridors across the city with native trees, shrubs and groundcovers. This new planting will increase movement corridors and habitat for land-based animals, improve water quality in our rivers and creeks, provide an increase in aquatic animal habitats and increase shade to cool our suburbs.

ATE25 Partnership
With the shared goal of increasing natural habitat within our city, Brisbane Sustainability Agency (BSA), Tourism and Events Queensland (TEQ) and Brisbane Economic Development Agency (BEDA) are working together to achieve the Biodiverse Brisbane Initiative target on behalf of delegates attending this year’s Australian Tourism Exchange (ATE) event in Brisbane.
As part of this partnership, TEQ and BEDA have generously contributed $15,000 on behalf of the 750 international tourism distribution partners attending ATE. The funding will support the planting of 1,000 native plants within the Archerfield Wetlands, located along the Oxley Creek riparian corridor.
The contribution includes site preparation and initial maintenance, with BSA supporting two years of further maintenance to ensure the plants are well established over their initial years of growth.
Site preparation works and ongoing maintenance will be undertaken by the Oxley Creek Catchment Association, the local catchment group that has planted and maintained hundreds of thousands of plants within the Oxley Creek Catchment through its volunteer base and its Business Services Unit.
The planting itself will be carried out by community volunteers, making this a collaborative effort between local organisations, international partners, and the broader Brisbane community.
About the site: Archerfield Wetlands
Archerfield Wetlands Parkland is located in Brisbane’s south-west, approximately 12 kilometres from Brisbane’s Central Business District (CBD). The 150-hectare parkland contains a variety of habitats including eucalypt forest, open grassland, freshwater wetlands and creeks. These habitat areas support over 170 different bird species.
The revegetation site is along the Wetlands Discovery Trail, where the condition is currently a degraded modified wetland with patches of salvinia and water hyacinth within open water area. The revegetation works will develop a vegetated wetland buffer to increase biodiversity and wetland resilience as well as foraging and habitat areas for amphibians, aquatic reptiles and aquatic birds. Wetland trees, shrubs and grasses/sedges will be planted in both dense and sparse patches to allow for intact areas for habitat as well as allowing for views into and across the wetland.
