Reimagining Mt Coot-tha:
A Sustainable Future for Brisbane’s Natural Icon
Brisbane Sustainability Agency Appointed to Lead Mt Coot-tha Master Plan
Mt Coot-tha, one of Brisbane’s most cherished natural landmarks, is set to be transformed into a world-class eco-tourism destination. Brisbane Sustainability Agency, known for its successful revitalisation of Oxley Creek, has been appointed to lead the development of a long-term Master Plan that will protect, enhance, and reimagine this iconic precinct.
Our Role and Next Steps
Brisbane Sustainability Agency is honoured to lead this legacy initiative. Over the coming months, we’ll begin investigations and engagement to shape a vision that reflects Brisbane’s values and ambitions. This is more than a rehabilitation project, it’s about creating a lasting legacy for generations to come.
Community and Stakeholder Engagement
We’re committed to working closely with the community, stakeholders, and industry – just as we did with Oxley Creek – to ensure the future of Mt Coot-tha reflects what Brisbane wants and needs. Your voice will help shape the precinct’s transformation.
Vision for the Precinct
Our goal is to create a globally recognised, nature-based destination that celebrates Mt Coot-tha’s unique character. The Master Plan will balance environmental protection, cultural heritage, recreation, and sustainable tourism, offering new experiences for locals and visitors alike.
A Legacy for Brisbane
This initiative is about creating a place that Brisbane residents are proud of and visitors from around the world will seek out. As we head toward the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Mt Coot-tha will stand as a symbol of Brisbane’s natural beauty, innovation, and community spirit.
Master Plan Highlights
The Master Plan will explore a wide range of sustainable, nature-based attractions and experiences, including:
- A 170-kilometre Brisbane Wilderness Trail connecting Mt Coot-tha to Mt Archer, with bush huts, glamping, composting toilets, and wayfinding.
- A night-time light show in the Brisbane Botanic Gardens.
- A revitalised Tropical Dome and reimagined Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium.
- A tree-top walk at The Summit, designed for accessibility and immersive nature experiences.
- Eco-tourism glamping and sustainable nature retreats.
- Mtain bike skills tracks, new picnic areas, and pop-up cafes.
- A one-way loop road on Sir Samuel Griffith Drive with a dedicated cycling lane.
- A long-term vision to transform the Mt Coot-tha Quarry into a must-visit destination once operations cease.
Acknowledging Mt Coot-tha’s Significance
We recognise how deeply valued Mt Coot-tha is to Brisbane’s identity. It’s a place that holds meaning for our city’s past, present, and future. We’ve heard the feedback shared over the years, and our commitment is to honour that connection while creating a destination that welcomes and inspires all.
Inspired by Global Icons
Drawing inspiration from world-renowned nature precincts such as Kings Park (WA), Butchart Gardens (Canada), and Gardens by the Bay (Singapore), the Mt Coot-tha Master Plan will blend conservation with innovation to create a destination that celebrates Brisbane’s natural beauty.
