Mt Coot-tha Precinct

Brisbane Sustainability Agency, on behalf of Brisbane City Council, is leading the development of a long-term plan that will protect, enhance and re-imagine the Mt Coot-tha Precinct as an iconic destination for Brisbane, delivering environmental, social and economic value for generations to come.

About the Vision

The Mt Coot-tha Precinct Vision aims to create a premier ‘must do’ Brisbane destination that:

  • Showcases Brisbane’s natural environment
  • Supports Brisbane’s experience economy and tourism ambitions
  • Delivers an exceptional visitor experience
  • Reflects community values.

The precinct includes the Brisbane Botanic Gardens Mt Coot-tha, Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium, the Summit, Mt Coot-tha Quarry, broadcasting network facilities and infrastructure and an extensive network of walking tracks and trails, as well as bushland reserve, parks and open spaces.

Key Opportunities

As part of the development of the Precinct Vision, Brisbane Sustainability Agency will explore the following opportunities.

  • New and enhanced eco-tourism experiences, from immersive walking and cycling links to curated adventure and wellness offerings.
  • A long-term strategy to transform the Mt Coot-tha Quarry into a vibrant public space once operations conclude.
  • Upgrades and new experiences at the Brisbane Botanic Gardens Mt Coot-tha, including redevelopment of the Tropical Display Dome and reimagining the Planetarium.
  • Identify opportunities to enhance the night time experience in the precinct.
  • Improvements to the Summit to create a world-class visitor experience.
  • Revegetation and habitat restoration to support native wildlife and enhance local biodiversity.
  • Creation of a long-distance recreational trail, linking Mt Coot-tha to D’Aguilar National Park, reinforcing Brisbane’s leadership in nature-based recreation.

Early Deliverables

Brisbane Sustainability Agency will identify opportunities to deliver early enhancements within the precinct. Projects and initiatives that have previously been through consultation, planning and/or approvals will be advanced where there is an opportunity to do so.

Community Engagement

During the development of the Precinct Vision, Brisbane Sustainability Agency will undertake a range of engagement activities with ongoing updates and opportunities to participate in shaping a precinct that reflects our city’s values and aspirations.

Engagement activities are currently underway, including consultation with key stakeholders and representatives from environment, community, recreation, tourism, industry and education groups.
A draft Vision is scheduled to be released in mid-late 2026, with opportunity for the community to provide feedback before the Precinct Vision is finalised in 2027.

Brisbane Sustainability Agency has launched the Mt Coot-tha Precinct Visitor Survey to understand how the community use and value the precinct today. Your input will help shape future plans by providing insights on how Brisbane experiences and appreciates this iconic destination.
