Brisbane Sustainability Agency helps bring certified Carbon Literacy training to Australia’s sport sector
After a year of collaboration, Brisbane Sustainability Agency, Let Me Be Frank and Green Planet Sport have delivered a certified program designed to build practical sustainability action across the sporting sector.
Brisbane Sustainability Agency is proud to have co-authored and delivered a new sport sector Carbon Literacy training program alongside Let Me Be Frank and Green Planet Sport. Built through a year of collaboration, the course is now accredited by The Carbon Literacy Project for wider use in the Australian market.

Why sport matters
Sport has a sizeable environmental footprint, but it also has unrivalled reach. When sport leads, communities follow. Large events, venues and competitions generate significant emissions through travel, infrastructure and day‑to‑day operations. While many sporting organisations and governing bodies have committed to net zero and other climate targets, there has been a gap in training that speaks directly to the realities of the sports sector.
What the sports Carbon Literacy course delivers
This new sports Carbon Literacy course addresses that gap. Designed specifically for sport, it builds a shared baseline understanding of climate change, carbon emissions and sector‑specific impacts. The training ensures participants are working from the same knowledge base when tackling complex organisational and sector‑wide challenges. It combines climate science with practical, sport‑relevant examples to support meaningful action.
Accredited and Austalian‑first
In the UK, Carbon Literacy for Sport is already being rolled out using a sector toolkit approach that supports clubs, venues and governing bodies to deliver training consistently while still tailoring it to their context. We are excited to build on that momentum here, expanding Brisbane Sustainability Agency’s Sustainable Action Training program with an Australian specific course for the sports sector. Accredited by The Carbon Literacy Project, the course meets rigorous international standards and is the first of its kind tailored to the Australian sporting context.

Our existing work with community sport
Community sport plays a vital role in bringing people together and Brisbane Sustainability Agency is proud to support clubs to be more sustainable and resilient.
Through our Resilient Clubs Support Program, we have worked with more than 260 sporting clubs and community organisations across Brisbane to reduce energy and water use, lower operating costs and future-proof facilities. We have also supported flood-affected, community-leased sporting facilities to rebuild stronger through the Rebuild and Recover Flood Resilient Communities Program.
These on-the-ground insights are shaping our next chapter as we expand this work through our sports program, supporting both community clubs and the professional sector with practical education and action.
