A conversation with Luke Fraser: Driving Sustainability at Howard Smith Wharves

Tracy: Howard Smith Wharves has demonstrated a remarkable commitment to sustainability through various innovative initiatives. Could you share what specifically inspired this dedication?

Luke: From day one, we’ve been driven by a bold vision – to create the most sustainable precinct on the planet. Sustainability isn’t something we added on later; it’s been built into the DNA of Howard Smith Wharves from the very beginning.

When we first had the opportunity to reimagine the space over 10 years ago, we started with a blank slate. That allowed us to ask, what would it take to create the most sustainable precinct on the planet? Being located right on the Brisbane River, with all the natural beauty around us, it just made sense to lead with environmental responsibility – for our precinct, our city, and our industry.

Tracy: Balancing commercial success with environmental responsibility is a significant challenge for many businesses today. Could you elaborate on the strategies and practices Howard Smith Wharves employs to achieve this balance?

Luke: There’s often a misconception that sustainability comes at the expense of business success, but that’s simply not true. It’s not a zero-sum game. With the right goals and the right partners, environmental responsibility can absolutely drive commercial value.

At Howard Smith Wharves, our focus is on creating inclusive spaces and experiences for the community – and that includes minimising our environmental impact. We believe the future is green, so we’re investing in the technology and infrastructure needed to reduce emissions and contribute to a more sustainable world.

Tracy: Howard Smith Wharves has achieved several impressive sustainability milestones. Could you share a recent example that stands out?

Luke: There are a couple that really stand out. In 2024, we partnered with Origin Zero to conduct an energy audit of the entire precinct. One of the major outcomes from that was the installation of solar panels, which allows us to harness Brisbane’s abundant sunshine and move towards renewable energy use across the site.

Back in 2023, we became the first site in Queensland to install GoTerra – a pioneering food waste management system. We now have more than 19 waste streams operating across the precinct, and we’re always looking for ways to reduce our waste and lessen our impact.

Tracy: Partnerships often play a crucial role in achieving sustainability goals. Could you elaborate on how collaborations with other organisations have supported Howard Smith Wharves in its sustainability journey?

Luke: Partnerships are critical. To reach our sustainability goals, we rely on working with people and organisations who share our vision and values. Whether it’s corporate partners, government agencies, council, or the broader community—collaboration allows us to achieve far more than we could alone.

We’re also proud to support local organisations that are doing incredible work. For example, we’re long-time supporters of Healthy Land and Water, an independent group committed to protecting Southeast Queensland’s environment, especially the Brisbane River.

Tracy: Starting a sustainability journey can be challenging for many businesses. What advice would you offer to those just beginning this path?

Luke: First and foremost – share what you’re learning. We’ve had hundreds of local businesses come through Howard Smith Wharves to tour the precinct, see our systems in action, and take away ideas they can apply in their own spaces.

We’re also constantly asking ourselves how we can do better. Our team is empowered to contribute ideas and lead change – it’s a collective effort.

And my biggest piece of advice? Be bold. Don’t be afraid to set ambitious goals. Now’s the time to think big and take meaningful steps toward a more sustainable future—not just for your business, but for the city we all share.

Howard Smith Wharves exemplifies the innovative spirit and dedication required to drive meaningful change in our community. Their ambitious goal of ‘becoming the most sustainable precinct on the planet’ is a testament to their commitment to environmental stewardship and serves as an inspiration to us all.

As we celebrate sustainability leaders like Howard Smith Wharves, Brisbane Sustainability Agency remains committed to sharing the stories that shape our city’s journey toward becoming one of Australia’s most sustainable. By inspiring, connecting, and supporting individuals, businesses, and government, we can build a more sustainable future—together.
