Brisbane Celebrates Two Years of Biodiverse Brisbane Initiative with 100,000 Native Plants Milestone
Brisbane is marking the second anniversary of the Biodiverse Brisbane Initiative with a major achievement with more than 100,000 native plants being planted since the program began in October 2023.
The latest milestone was reached this month with the planting of 30,000 native species across more than two hectares at Archerfield Wetlands Parkland with help from our corporate partners.
Brisbane Sustainability Agency CEO Tracy Melenewycz said the anniversary highlights the city’s commitment to a greener future.
“Thanks to our partners and volunteers, planting over 30,000 native species this October marks a powerful step toward a resilient and sustainable Brisbane, one that future generations will be proud to inherit.”
Plant species have been carefully selected to suit specific ecosystems, including wetlands, grasslands, woodlands and riparian corridors. More than 110 different species have been planted, creating diverse habitats that support wildlife and strengthen Brisbane’s ecological resilience.
“The Biodiverse Brisbane Initiative is about more than just plantings, it’s a long-term vision to collaborate with partners, industry and the community to restore biodiversity, protect our waterways and create thriving natural spaces,” said Tracy Melenewycz.
The Biodiverse Brisbane Initiative complements Brisbane City Council’s Clean, Green and Sustainable target, which aims to increase natural habitat cover on mainland Brisbane to 40% by 2031, ensuring 75% of natural habitat is connected and healthy.
The program’s ultimate goal is ambitious, one million native plants in wetland areas and waterway corridors across Brisbane by 2032, supported through corporate partnerships, grants and sponsorships.
Beyond beautifying our city, these plantings will create movement corridors and habitat for land-based animals, reduce erosion and improve water quality in rivers and creeks.
These efforts will make Brisbane’s suburbs more vibrant, healthier and liveable spaces for families and park users.
