Building Brisbane’s future through nature and partnership

Brisbane’s biodiversity is one of its greatest assets. Here’s how we’re protecting it, together.

When we talk about building a more sustainable Brisbane, we’re not just talking about targets and policies. We’re talking about real places, wetlands teeming with wildlife, community clubs that bounce back after floods and classrooms where the next generation learns that their choices matter.

That’s exactly what the Biodiverse Brisbane Initiative is about.

What is the Biodiverse Brisbane Initiative?

Led by Brisbane Sustainability Agency on behalf of Brisbane City Council, the Biodiverse Brisbane Initiative is a long-term, city-wide habitat restoration program with an ambitious goal: to plant over one million native trees, shrubs and groundcovers across Brisbane by 2032.

The initiative directly supports Brisbane City Council’s target to increase natural habitat cover on the mainland to 40 per cent by 2031, with 75 per cent of that habitat connected and ecologically healthy. In 2024–25 alone, 65,000 native plants were established through the program, strengthening ecological corridors, improving water quality and making Brisbane more resilient to the impacts of climate change.

This is big, long-term, city-shaping work. And it doesn’t happen without partners.

One year in: what RACQ Foundation and Brisbane Sustainability Agency have built together

In 2025, RACQ Foundation joined BSA as a key delivery partner and the results of that first year speak for themselves.

RACQ Foundation volunteers planted more than 5,000 native plants at Archerfield Wetlands, contributing to a broader effort that saw over 55,000 native plants established across the parklands in 2025. Those plantings are already creating critical habitat for local wildlife, improving water quality and enhancing one of Brisbane’s most significant wetland destinations.

But the partnership goes well beyond planting days.

RACQ and Brisbane Sustainability Agency are working side by side with community organisations and sporting clubs across South East Queensland, helping them to better understand their estimated flood level and risk, as well as supporting organisations with knowledge, advice and recommendations to ‘build back better’ to reduce future flooding impacts.

The two organisations are also co-developing a sustainability education program for school-aged children, one that connects hands-on planting experiences and site visits with practical knowledge about environmental and financial sustainability. It’s the kind of program that turns awareness into action.

What makes this partnership work isn’t just shared values, it’s a shared commitment to doing things properly, over time, with measurable outcomes. RACQ brings community reach, volunteer energy and expertise in financial wellbeing. Brisbane Sustainability Agency brings technical know-how, place-based relationships and a direct line to Council’s sustainability agenda. Together, they’re demonstrating what genuine corporate partnership looks like.

Why this matters and what’s possible for your organisation

The first year of Brisbane Sustainability Agency’s partnership with RACQ shows what’s achievable when a corporate partner aligns its purpose with city priorities. The outcomes are real, visible and lasting: native habitat restored, community clubs made more resilient, students engaged in climate action.

Brisbane Sustainability Agency is now looking to grow its network of corporate partners who are ready to invest in Brisbane’s future.

Whether your organisation wants to:

  • create visible, measurable nature-positive outcomes through large-scale planting and habitat restoration
  • offer your team meaningful volunteer and community engagement experiences
