Reduce your juice

Reduce Your Juice is Brisbane Sustainability Agency’s Australian-first energy saving program helping younger, digitally connected adults to change their electricity consumption habits and reduce their bills.

What is it?

The Reduce Your Juice program uses ‘gamification’ to drive behavioural change. Householders engage with energy reduction messaging via a smart-phone based energy-saving game, as well as social media and email platforms. Technical elements of the program were developed in partnership with Queensland University of Technology.

Reduce Your Juice uses a unique experiential ‘learning by doing’ behavioural approach to shape behaviour, making energy saving easy, rewarding and fun.  The goal is not just one-off bills savings but sustained behaviour change.

Brisbane Sustainability Agency has run Reduce Your Juice 8 times with thousands of Australian households. This includes a major engagement with the Queensland Government as part of its Energy Savvy Families program for regional Queensland.

The program is designed to help residents prepare for and recover from overland flow flooding, and is currently being trialled in locations across the city that have a history of this type of flooding.

Residents receive a free Home Service by flood-resilience experts, followed by recommendations which may include works to increase the flood resilience of a property funded through the Incentive Scheme. These works are designed by architects and undertaken by licensed builders and can range from raising power points to tilting floors and more extensive works. In most cases there is no cost to the property owner.

Flood-resilient design enables home owners and residents to safely store belongings prior to a flood event, and easily clean, repair and quickly move back in after floods with minimal long-term disruption.

Outcomes:

  • Households saved $52 on average on their quarterly electricity bills
  • Households reduced energy consumption by 12.3% within the first year
  • Over 82% said the program helped them monitor their energy usage on average
  • Over 90% on average liked the program and would recommend it to family and friend
