Celebrating the winners of Brisbane City Council’s 2020 WasteSMART Brisbane Awards

On Wednesday 25 November, the 2020 WasteSMART Brisbane Awards recipients were celebrated in a ceremony at City Hall.

Three months of nominations and votes culminated at the ceremony where the winners of the 11 awards were announced, honouring those in the community who have gone above and beyond to reduce waste to landfill, increase resource recovery and help preserve Brisbane’s natural environment.

Brisbane Sustainability Agency partnered with Brisbane City Council to deliver the WasteSMART Brisbane Awards and all finalists were judged by a panel of industry experts, except the People’s Choice Award, which was voted by members of the public.

This year’s awards attracted 195 nominations and over 4,000 public votes. The Deputy Lord Mayor Krista Adams, presented the Awards on behalf of Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner.

Winners of the sponsored awards included:

  • Cleanaway People’s Choice Award went to Manny Findlay, who has become a local legend for actively cleaning his local parks, advocating to keep his suburb clean alongside his local Councillor and offering a wheelie bin cleaning service.
  • University of Queensland WasteSMART Champions Awards were awarded to Ethan Heng, who has hosted three community clean up days; and Renae McBrien who delivers waste reform and education programs across health services in Brisbane.
  • Containers for Change Queensland WasteSMART Community Awards went to OzHarvest for their efforts in rescuing surplus food from commercial businesses that would otherwise go to landfill; and to eWaste Connection, who operate an electrical waste recycling centre.
  • IKEA WasteSMART Schools Awards went to Yeronga State School Green Team and Hillbrook Anglican School for their impressive waste management strategies.
