Pine Mountain Quarry:
From Industrial Past to Nature’s Future
Brisbane Sustainability Agency has been appointed by Brisbane City Council to lead the long-term vision and transformation of the Pine Mountain Quarry.
This precinct-scale regeneration will revitalise a former industrial site into a thriving hub, restoring native ecosystems, expanding koala habitat, and creating new recreational, nature-based and cultural experiences for Brisbane’s growing suburbs.
Why Pine Mountain Matters
Situated adjacent to Whites Hill Reserve, Pine Mountain Quarry is evolving from its legacy as a quarrying site and its more recent role in asphalt and concrete recycling.
More than 600 community voices have already been received that will help shape the Vision, expressing strong support for:
- Restoring critical habitat for native species, especially koalas.
- Expanding open green spaces and recreation (off-road cycling, bushwalking, nature trails).
- Introducing unique features like a natural swimming hole, inspired by Enoggera Reserve.
- Educational and interpretive experiences linking community and environment.
This project is another step in our leadership journey, building on the legacy of Oxley Creek Transformation and the citywide Biodiverse Brisbane Initiative, which has set the ambitious goal of planting one million native plants by 2032.
Our Approach
Our regeneration vision will proceed in stages:
- Stage One (North-West section): Focused on ecological restoration, koala habitat expansion, and low-impact recreation, featuring tracks and trails, scenic lookouts, and interpretive signage designed to enhance visitor experience and appreciation of the natural landscape.
- Stage Two (South-East section): Reimagining former industrial areas as vibrant community and recreation destinations, guided by environmental sustainability, local identity and opportunities for cultural expression, while also supporting local and suburban tourism by creating unique experiences that attract visitors and celebrate the character of the region.
Drawing from the award-winning Oxley Creek Transformation project framework, Pine Mountain Quarry’s transformation will enrich suburban liveability and champion Brisbane’s reputation as Australia’s Nature Capital.
What’s Next?
Consistent with best practice demonstrated at Mt Coot-tha and Oxley Creek, we will:
- Integrate insights from existing plans, background research and key stakeholder interests to guide alignment and informed decision-making.
- Keep the community informed through timely updates and accessible information as the Vision progresses.
- Maintain ongoing communications and updates through the delivery programs.
Stay tuned for updates and opportunities to participate as we evolve Pine Mountain Quarry into a nature-positive and based destination in the heart of Brisbane’s suburbs.
