Waterways cleanup

Help protect Brisbane’s waterways by taking part in Brisbane City Council’s Community Waterways Clean Up Program, delivered in partnership with Brisbane Sustainability Agency. 

Between March and June 2021 you can participate in clean up events at Moorhen Flats to reduce litter in the surrounding waterways. 

You will have an opportunity to learn about Council’s environmental initiatives and meet local community organisations and residents helping to keep our waterways clean and green. 

These events are championed by Villanova College, who are helping to bring the local community together to look after our environment. 

Event Dates 

Launch Event 

Come along to our launch event to enjoy live music, displays from local community groups, BBQ supplied by the Stones Corner Rotary Club, and other fun eco-activities! 

• Sunday 28 March 2021, 8.30am-11.30am 

Clean Up Events with Villanova College 

• Sunday 18 April 2021, 8.00-11.00am 
• Sunday 16 May 2021, 8.00-11.00am 
• Sunday 6 June 2021, 8.00-11.00am 

Address 

Participants to meet at 114 Deshon Street, Woolloongabba. Participants will receive a safety briefing and clean up materials before heading to clean up the Moorhen Flats area. 

How to take part 

Anyone can take part and register on the day. If you wish to receive event updates and reminders, you can register your details here. 

Participants should bring a hat, closed in shoes, a water bottle, and ensure sunscreen is worn. 

COVID-Safe Protocols 

Please DO NOT ATTEND the event if: 

• you have currently, or have recently experienced any COVID-19 symptoms including cough, fever, sore throat, fatigue or shortness of breath 
• you, or a member of your household, has travelled overseas in the past 30 days 
• you have been in close contact with a person who is positive for COVID-19 

• you are an active COVID-19 case. 

To limit the spread of the virus at the event please: 

• stay at least 1.5 meters away from others 
• don’t shake hands and avoid any other close physical contact where possible 
• cover coughs and sneezes with an elbow or tissues 

• avoid touching your face, eyes, nose and mouth 
• wash your hands or use hand sanitiser after touching any surfaces, eating or drinking 
• Seek assistance from event staff at the information tent if you become unwell during the event. 

About Moorhen Flats 

Moorhen Flats was former industrial land leftover from Council’s late-1980s flood mitigation works in Norman Creek. It was suggested by a local business owner that it could be made into green space, and following negotiations, a decision was made to create a bush habitat site. 

The area has been planted out with hundreds of new native trees, shrubs and grasses. The site has become a magnet for birdlife with 112 species observed. Maintaining the waterway and vegetation at Moorhen Flats is critical to ensuring the survival of the many wonderful native species that live in this habitat.
